The WAR OF THE WORLDS 747 Crash Site Film Set at Universal Studios Hollywood
Video Channel: When Dinosaurs Ruled The Earth
As part of the Studio Tram Tour at Universal Studios Hollywood you will pass through a huge outdoor airplane crash set built for War of the Worlds, directed by Steven Spielberg. Spielberg and crew were on the Universal backlot for three days (Jan 5 - 7 2005) shooting on the massive outdoor set.
A commercial 747 aircraft was bought by the production and then chopped into pieces and transported to Universal, where the full set has been left fully dressed as it was during filming. The plane cost $60,000 (quite reasonable for a decommissioned 747) but the real costs were in the transportation to Universal Studios, which used flatbed trucks, a police escort, and a helicopter, and totalled $20,000.
